Over the last ten years Jacko Hooper has collaborated, performed and released records with artists such as Bastille, Michael Kiwanuka, Chet Faker, James Bay, Kiefer Sutherland, James Blunt, Passenger, Billie Marten, Freya Ridings, Bess Atwell and many, many more.

Having founded Brighton-based promotions company Folklore Sessions and as of 2021, music venue The Folklore Rooms, the time has come for Hooper to release his own full-length album. This is Respair.

The world changed in 2020 but due to other events in Hooper’s life he found himself in the midst of a mental health crisis that left him in a situation where he had to re-learn how to live his life in a normal way. The fallout of this experience left him needing to document it’s story in the form of this record, to be able to truly move beyond that experience he needed to capture it, to feel it in it’s entirety and come out the other side.

Hooper has never shied away from speaking of mental health issues, with it being a recurring theme in his releases over the years. None of them hit quite the same however, as Respair.

Honest, open and at times provoking, Respair takes the listener on a journey and was created in the form an album should be truly listened to, from start to finish.

Featuring some of his closest friends and peers the record features Harry Fausing Smith (Tom Misch) on strings and saxophone, Chris Matthewson (Bess Atwell) a duet with Edie Bens (Glassnote Records) and was mixed by lifelong friend and collaborator Josh Trinnaman of Luo. (Whose mixing credits include Ry X, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds amongst others). Other notable contributions include Rebecca Brandler on vocals, Joe Hall on drums and Tommy Peach on trumpet.

All other music written and recorded by Jacko Hooper from the sanctuary of his home studio.

    "Something quite darkly beautiful..."

    - Charlie Ashcroft, Amazing Radio

"His accomplished indie-folk sound showcases honest and emotive lyricism with an intrinsic and enchanting pop catchiness" - The Unsigned Guide

"Achingly honest lyricism which is just absolutely beautiful"

Nowhere 03:58
*Voice Note* We all do it in our own time, When I know what's going on, I'll get in touch with you soon anyway Let you know how I'm going with these meds It'll be like another, sort of, yeah second wave sort of vibe I would have thought What is a summer, if you're not fucking with your brain chemistry? It's just who I am But yeah just keep me in the loop mate, Let me know what's going on *Voice Note End* Take another way, to Nowhere.
2.
I could never see What it was you saw in me But we've all had enough now, Time is liberty We've all had enough now, Surely time's delivering I would never be What it was you thought i'd be But we've all had enough now, Time is liberty We've all had enough now, Surely time's delivering I cannot see Where I want to be I'm not quite here I know we will not align We're getting no place fast this time.

Zombie 03:46
We know were way over our head, I wish I was someone else instead But I'd love to be, Anywhere but me Eyes working binoculars with no reach A presence but nothing tangible to see Save me from the zombie, darling Keep me from the night time's frightening Save me from the zombie, darling Keep me from the night time's frightening We know we're not over this yet That was the scariest me I've ever met But i've learned to be, Okay with me Hands working like they govern with no thought Why hold on to something that i'm not? Save me from the zombie, darling Keep me from the night time's frightening Save me from the zombie, darling Keep me from the night time's frightening
4.
Show me, there's nothing between us It's okay, There's love and there's beauty It's alright, it's not far Don't stray, Too far from our home, There's nothing, To keep us together But all things, All things we've grown Trust me, i'll be here waiting It's my time, To keep us from fading There's no sign Our fate has torn
5.
Twisting and turning, my insides are out Thoughts are all in doubt Senseless and humid, I lie awake My spine shakes Sick to the bone, my ailments alone It's hard to describe the mire It's been a long haul back It's been a long haul back It's been a long haul back, This time. I must do this, You must not fear it But please never leave my side Missing the feeling, I stare at the ceiling I'm not sure I'm able to hide But it's been a long haul, It's been a long haul back, It's been a long haul, This time.
6.
Let's try again, Like we did as a boy, Same street, different time Longer legs but further to climb Again and again As we risk our mind Don't give in to something that you don't even know yet Don't cave in to something that you've only just met My friend, I'm just hoping for the best I don't even know how I'm getting up yet You might just crack to something that you thought you don't know yet You might just fall to something that's been building up strength Again and again, As you lose it all. My friend, I'm just hoping for the best I don't even know how I'm get getting up yet My friend, I'm just hoping for the best I don't even know how I'm getting up yet
7.
I can't find the words, I'm a cliche but real, I know you don't need me, To say how I feel Don't think that i'm hopeless I'm just hopelessly yours Waking alone, is not a home It's just four walls The whiskey's ran out The year has been tough But together we must be, More than enough More than enough. Growing succulents As fast as this winter, But you trust me to get them there No pain, no splinter I'm late home from work But you're keeping me fed As an angel is sleeping At the bottom of our bed. It's more than enough It's more than enough It's more than enough.
8.
Have you seen all the news? Turn on your screen and you'll see Doomsday's back so it seems But this time he'll get you for real Don't try, and censor your view Watch all the pain in lieu, You don't matter at all This number will one day be you So darling let's run Way over there Where we're not seen I promise you this There's hopes and there's dreams To where we retreat Have you burned down what you know? They're saying it won't be the same I fall in line now i'm told For this time they'll taunt and maim Don't try and push through There's safety in numbers you fool You won't feel it all I promise it's easier this way So darling let's run Way over there Where we're not seen I promise you this There's hopes and there's dreams To where we retreat

Respair 06:30
I felt it too, Saw it conquer you You think you're never coming back though You are though, you are You are, the one you thought you were before I never thought I was in control Step aside 'cos i'm off the wall A moment now, a lifetime later I will surrender, what i've been under I never thought I was in control (You know you are, though) Step aside 'cos i'm off the wall (You know you are) A moment now, a lifetime later (You are the one you thought you were before) I will surrender, what i've been under

No one will reach you, if you're gone No satellite will carry on In not too soon, you'll see it clear Those around, those not so near An atom bomb that noone knew, Will come along and speak for you, My hometown's a graveyard, these days Boys don't come of age Another day, another soul No point in giving all you know We're only here 'cos we're not them Another win for Bethlehem No-one will reach you if you're gone No satellite will carry on In not too soon, you'll see it clear Those around, Those not so near An atom bomb that no-one knew Will come along and speak for you My hometown's a graveyard these days Boys don't come of age.
